PAULINUM LEIPZIG

The Paulinum, which is part of the University of Leipzig, is situated in a historically important location and considered the city’s new landmark. Today, in the place where the gothic Pauliner Church once stood on Augustusplatz before being demolished by the communist regime in 1968, the symbolic new building by the Rotterdam based architect Erik van Egeraat has taken its place. The Paulinum unites the auditorium and university church and aims to serve the secular and the religious life in the city. Inside the striking building, whose form is reminiscent of the lost church, large glass surfaces structure the different sections and, at the same time, establish a visual unity.

For the seat rows in the auditorium and oratory, a commission of several people conducted a blind test of different products and decided in favour of the Thonet range S 160. In the auditorium, the church and on the gallery, a total of 817 black upholstered chairs S 162 with and without armrests are used. The chair series developed by Delphin Design for furnishing churches and event venues enables the maximum use of space and minimum time for assembly and disassembly. Thanks to the patented Thonet linking system, the chairs can be quickly and easily linked without the need for any extra tools.
