stilwerk Hotel Heimhude in Hamburg showcases strong design choices

Hamburg’s new stilwerk Hotel Heimhude is located in an imposing building on Heimhuder Straße, midway between the Alster lake and Dammtor district. The pretty Art Nouveau villa, which is more than 150 years old, has a timeless modern charm about it, and the creative team from stilwerk has designed an impressive interior featuring more than 40 premium brands to show off the building’s full potential. With its 24 guest rooms, gym, library, lounge, meeting room and garden, this “grande dame in sneakers”, as the building is affectionately known, is the epitome of high-end design and craftsmanship. Natural materials and attention to detail make this hotel a very special home away from home. What’s really special about it is that guests at the stilwerk Hotel Heimhude can treat their stay as a trial run before using the stilwerk design platform to recreate the hotel’s look in their own homes. The products are available to buy directly from the interior design expert based in Hamburg’s Fish Market district or via the stilwerk online shop. Hotel staff are more than happy to advise guests on their new favourite piece of furniture, and a brand book is also available for consultation.

The meeting room, which looks out onto the garden, and the Living Kitchen, which serves as the hotel reception by day and a bar by night, have been furnished with chairs from the Thonet 118 range. Stained black with a canework seat, this minimalist, yet elegant piece is the perfect addition to the stylish interior. In the Living Kitchen at the heart of the hotel, the stark design of the chairs contrasts with the burnt yellow upholstery on the benches (“Phlox” corduroy covering designed by Raf Simons for Kvadrat). In the meeting room, the chairs provide comfortable seating and help create a calming environment.

“The stilwerk hotel’s concept is firmly set on showcasing a diverse range of high-quality furniture makers based in Europe, ideally manufacturers that focus on craftsmanship. Thonet was an obvious choice. Specifically, we were on the lookout for a bold, classic chair design that, just like our Art Nouveau villa, offers a contemporary interpretation, uniting old and new in wonderful symbiosis. This is why the stilwerk creative team opted for the 118 range by designer Sebastian Herkner. His modern coffee house style is the perfect complement to the original mosaic floor tiles, which have been painstakingly restored. The tiles date back to the 19^th century and were unearthed during work to replace the floor in our Living Kitchen. We were also drawn to the chair’s delicate canework. This should be no surprise as handcrafted pieces using natural materials dominate the design theme throughout the hotel,” explains the stilwerk creative team, who worked on the project alongside owner Alexander Garbe and hotel manager Tatjana Groß.
