Pizzeria Via Tribunali, Helsinki

Pizzeria Via Tribunali has been serving up Neapolitan cuisine in Helsinki since 2017, bringing a piece of the Mediterranean to Finland’s capital city. There are now six Pizzeria Via Tribunali restaurants here, employing a dedicated team of more than 50 people, and the franchise continues to grow. It is the only Italian restaurant in Finland to have been certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN). Pizzeria Via Tribunali is also committed to reducing its carbon footprint, implementing sustainability measures in the areas of product creation, packaging and accessibility.

A new Pizzeria Via Tribunali restaurant has just opened its doors in the historical harbour district of Katajanokka in east Helsinki. Featuring numerous art nouveau buildings, today Katajanokka is an attractive, bustling district. Interior designer Anni Taimisto, who specialises in designing gathering spaces such as cafés and restaurants, has opted for a clear, clean design. The colour concept plays on the contrasts between different metallic and red and blue tones, while also bringing together the cosy, welcoming atmosphere and the industrial look that gives the district its charm. The dining area seats up to 130 guests, all of whom have a view of the handmade Italian oven, which is heated to 450 °C to make the restaurant’s pizzas.

Thonet’s S 43 chair was the perfect choice for the restaurant’s minimalist aesthetics. The geometric cantilever chair has been manufactured by Thonet since the 1930s and is an iconic design synonymous with the spirit of modernism. Furniture designed by Mart Stam is focused on high utility and economy, both aesthetically and materially, and the S 43 is no exception. With his design for the S 43 cantilever chair, Stam created the ultimate minimalist piece by combining a tubular steel frame with moulded plywood for the seat and backrest. The design has been refined as part of an evolutionary process and is the perfect piece for high-end yet understated spaces.

Here in Pizzeria Via Tribunali, the minimalist chair appears in a version with chrome-plated tubular steel and dark-blue stained beech. Both materials create a striking contrast with the restaurant’s terracotta-coloured tiles and benches. Four S 43 cantilever chairs have been arranged around each round table, creating an intimate culinary experience in the open space of the restaurant.
