A popular holiday destination on the French Riviera between Cannes and Nice, Antibes became a film industry hot spot in the 1950s. Here, the restaurant “La  Maison des Pêcheurs” was a favourite haunt for the jet set and international stars since 1945 . Part of the exclusive Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel, located on the peninsula south of the city, the now Michelin-starred restaurant is run under the name “Les Pêcheurs” (‘The Fishermen’) and serves fresh seafood against a breath-taking backdrop.

The dining area features a sea view and is styled with elegant, shiny chrome and rich brown tones that lend the restaurant an extra touch of luxury. This space includes 55 Thonet S 34 cantilever chairs, which echo the room’s colour and material concept. The iconic tubular steel chairs are reflected in the chrome-plated columns, and the specially dyed leather covers perfectly match the dark hue of the wooden floor and wall panelling.

Dutch architect and designer Mart Stam created the S 34 in 1926. His design combines clear lines with delicate proportions and a cubic form with an air of lightness. Stam began experimenting with gas pipes in 1925, using threaded elbow joins  to connect them, just like a plumber would. Through continued experimentation, Stam created the principle of cantilever chairs which no longer rested on four legs – a construction principle which became integral to the history of modern furniture design. In his time, Stam’s S 34 cantilever chair with armrests (S 33 without armrests) embodied a new perspective on architecture, and on life itself, and has today become a celebrated design icon.
