What were your priorities when it came to the interior design for your house? How would you describe your interior style?
For us, it always depends on where exactly we are living. Here in Majorca, we have a beautiful old finca built in 1914. There is an open-plan living area and kitchen complete with a fireplace and huge windows that look out onto the cactus garden. The windows have a 1970s feel to them, so we quickly settled on a modern seventies style for the interior. The colours from this decade are a natural match for the hues of this Balearic island’s landscape. We aimed to incorporate Majorca’s beautiful, rich colours throughout the house. From cactus green to strong earthy tones – just like the natural surroundings here. We really look to our surroundings and all that nature has to offer when creating our interior spaces.
When did you first come in contact with Thonet?
I have loved Thonet for a long time now. The furniture’s simple elegance is something I have always admired. I loved the Thonet chairs that my great-grandparents had and I am delighted that we now finally have our own.
For your home in Majorca you chose the iconic S 64 tubular steel cantilever chair in walnut and the S 5000 tubular steel sofa with green corduroy upholstery. Why did you chose these pieces and what is it that you love about them?
The tubular steel cantilever chair is simply a timeless classic, elegant and eye-catching in any home. And we also chose it because it was perfect for the interior concept we had settled on. The chairs look great around our circular glass table and really add a special charm to the room. And I hope that they will be around for as long as I am. The green tubular steel sofa now stands in the large kitchen of our house in Mallorca. We envisioned this house as a place for an artistic community, a space to celebrate and live out the idea of coming together and spending time with one another. The sofa is the perfect addition to the room and will make the many evenings we plan to spend there even more comfortable.
Were longevity and timelessness also factors in your decision to choose these pieces?
Of course. Those are just some of the many advantages to choosing furniture from Thonet.
Which Thonet pieces are still on your wish list?
I’m a big fan of the bentwood chairs – with or without armrests, I like them all. We will definitely get round to adding some to our home. And the S 285 desk also caught my eye a while back. It’s just a shame that I don’t have an office to put it in.
